Diego’s Story – Levaquin Side-Effects

*The following is an individual’s story of surviving fluoroquinolone toxicity. It is not medical advice. Please see the disclaimer at the bottom of the story. Thank you, and please be cautious with all treatments.

I was first given LEVAQUIN at age 26 when I had endoscopic surgery of my sinus. After that, my ENT doctor would prescribe me LEVAQUIN every time I had a sinus infection for the next six and half years.  Everything went hay wire the last time I took it at age 32.  During the six and a half years I took it, it had not affected me like it did when I took it at age 32, in March of 2011.  At age 32 I came down with a very strong sinus infection and would not go away so I took LEVAQUIN and I became very ill.  I woke up one morning and the back of my head felt numb.  I panicked and as I proceeded to my living room I felt tingling all over my head as if someone were pouring water inside my brain. I was blacking out and so I called EMS with my cell phone and my family with my house phone and sat on the couch.  I immediately thought I could possibly be having an aneurism.  Once EMS arrived my blood pressure was elevated and I was shaking.  Once I got to the hospital they ran many tests and did not find anything.  The only concern was that my liver count was a little elevated and was advised to continue to taking LEVAQUIN. (In the past I had read on the possible tendon tears and told myself not to use again, but I did because I trusted my doctor),  so I continued taking it despite the fact that from my knees down it was very difficult to walk and felt very heavy.  I began to have a lot of anxiety and my doctor prescribed Xanax to me.  So many strange things were happening and EMS took me again to the hospital weeks later. Again, they did not find anything and sent me home.  I woke up one morning and my entire body – from head to toe – felt very numb.  I could walk but it was very difficult.  I could barely shower so I went to my doctor and immediately they took me to a Neurologist and ran an MRI of my brain. For the next two weeks they ran many tests and I had to go on Medical Leave.  All of my tests came back normal.  The neurologist said my brain was/is perfectly intact.  The only deficiency I had was in vitamin D (count was 19).  So basically the neurologist told me I had experienced some toxicity in my body and there was nothing to do about that but that the body would resolve itself.  My family at this time feared I might have MS or a very serious condition but that was not the case.  All of this was very difficult because I felt like I was jumping out of my own skin, it was a very horrible feeling.  Everything seemed different.  My general doctor told me no medicine what so ever for a while.  I only took B12, Vitamin D, and melatonin to try and sleep a little bit.  I had a constant feeling as if I were dying.

After six weeks I began to make small progress and returned to work and was off for the summer. During the summer of 2011 I attended physical therapy but it was very hard for me to do much. My body was very stiff.  For an entire year I took Vitamin D and some B12.  I began to eat very healthy and live life very simply.  I was not able to sing any more or be as active as I was before.

Then, my second year of recovery I did not take any more supplements. I reacted to everything.  My stomach kept getting worse with vitamin D. At exactly two years, I had a very bad relapse but came out faster than the first time. My vitamin D level was low again (17).  I had another MRI of brain, neck, and spinal cord.  Everything came back normal.  Again I had to go on medical leave and in six weeks I returned to work and then I had the summer again to keep getting better.  I was put on vitamin D supplements again for another year and after a full year I began hurting so much.  So I stopped. All this time I kept thinking it was just perhaps stress and low vitamin D.

Then I finally researched what my gut was telling me and I went back to the basics of LEVAQUIN went to my ENT and told her, I know what happened to me, I had an adverse reaction to LEVAQUIN!!! She said, yes I always had a suspicion that is what happened to you and it is just going to take time to recover. I told her I just want to get better.  She cried and hugged me and told me she was sorry.  I told her, just help me get better.  By this time I had come across FloxieHope.com and was communicating with Lisa. I presented my doctor with all kinds of research and she seemed very nervous. I told her I’m not mad, I told her she was human just like everyone else. So ever since this moment I realized LEVAQUIN is what went wrong in my body.  I must have taken over 60+ pills. So I can imagine that my recovery will be longer than most. This all happened in October of 2013 -This is when I realized that LEVAQUIN went wrong in my body and not a result of vitamin D deficiency. This is when I began to be very aggressive with my recovery. I began acupuncture and improved my diet. My job as a teacher helps me so much!!! It has been very hard to work these past 3 years but I have been able to! I praise God for His strength and I’m blessed to have my parents help me very much. I have been one of the best teachers in these past three years. We are now in March of 2014 and I have begun to use Doterra oils and I have seen some results but it is still early to tell their full benefits. (One thing I forgot to mention before is that during my first year of recovery, I had to get tubes in my ears since I couldn’t take medication for ear infection).

Life Now:

Well it has been three years since I became ill with the LEVAQUIN blues! I can do a lot of things, but I still can’t do a lot of things. I am much better than before. I feel about 65-70% recovered. I have much more power in my voice and can sing a little bit. The first two years my parents would stay with me a lot but now I stay by myself and do all my house chores and work successfully as a first grade bilingual teacher. I eat a very healthy diet and try to eat a little bit of everything.  I eat dessert sometimes and chocolate very little. I’m not afraid of dying anymore and I get in my car and go shopping.  I go to the grocery store and buy lots of organic food. I still have very bothersome symptoms and don’t quite feel like my old self, but I can laugh and smile more. I now believe I can reach 100% recovery!

Before being floxed I was in a hurry to live life.  I was always over-committed, an overachiever, in a hurry, did not take time to just sit and relax. (I was on my way to getting my Doctrate degree— I don’t want one any more)!  My mission was to become a school principal and keep moving up the ladder. Now I am so grateful to just teach, I know I will become a school principal one day, but I am not in a rush to get there right now.  I know it will happen when it needs to happen. No matter what I get up, get dressed, and show up! I still have a ways but I will get there, I know I will.

I am most concerned about being able to sing strong tenor notes again and be a part of my church choir and music ministry.  For a time a felt like I was going to end up in a wheel chair but I know now my legs need more time to heal.  I don’t stress about comparing my recovery to other floxies.  My recovery is mine and mine only and it will take me as long as it will take me.  My neurologist who at first thought I was crazy is on my side now and helps me every way he can and told me it would potentially take me 5-6 years to fully recover and told me that a day would come where all the symptoms would just go away.  CNS, tissue, tendons, ligaments, etc… are extremely slow to heal. He said I’m healthy and young enough to recover. I do a lot of nice things for people, makes me feel good! I’m very positive and an encourager. I live life as best as I can and try to do as much as I can. My suggestion to you all is to keep on keeping on. One day everything will pass! When? I don’t know, but it will.  I’m right here with ya!!! It’s a process, it’s a journey!  I know I will never take things for granted anymore! I know God has a very special plan for me and He has a special plan for you too!  I always wake up every day saying, “one day closer to my full recovery!”

Diego, your words have make me feel so good. Thanks. I was floxed with Cipro and Avelox. I hope I can soon have my story ready for Lisa. She has helped me so much as well. The thing that caught the most attention to me it is how you describe “I felt like I was jumping out of my own skin, it was a very horrible feeling” I try to explain this to my wife so many times and I couldn’t. I tall her I feel like if some one push my soul out, like if some shake me once hard but from the inside out. God is with us,

Diego I’m so very sorry to hear Levaquin caused you so many problems. I have recently been prescribed Levaquin 750mg for a stubborn sinus infection/bronchitis however right now I’m feeling terrible pain in my neck, shoulders, and jaw. I called my doctor and I stopped taking it. I think more people need to contact the FDA to demand they take this antibiotic off the market. May the good Lord above bring healing to all us who have suffered from this.

      • Lucy Sky December 6, 2015 at 2:06 pm Reply

        Hi Michael
That is exactly what I have been saying all along , by that I mean contacting the FDA to get these drugs/toxic substances banned once and for all. If that were to happen that would be the most uplifting experience that I can imagine.

I have tweeted to several influential celebrities imploring their help to get these poisons banned. Until someone famous or influential is personally affected by these poisonous substances then it is doubtful that anyone will take time out of their ‘busy’ lives to do anything to assist us win this battle against Big Pharma or should that be BIG HARMA.
However i intend to carry on trying to obtain justice.

I refuse to give in or give up. That would be what Big Pharma wants and I am therefore going to dig my heels in and do the opposite to what these ruthless bastards want.
        Hang on in there.

Love your story and your positive attitude. The other day I was describing my feelings initially and up to this day, and said “it was as if the life force in my chest was taken out of me…what internal organ is that?” It’s good to hear what your neurologist said that the healing takes time. I especially like #24…hard to do sometimes, though. Thank you for sharing!

Can you elaborate on your ear surgery post being floxed? Did you get general anesthesia? If yes, did you have to request a certain type, or be sure to avoid a certain type? I had an adverse reaction to cipro in March 2014 that lasted about a month and still has some mild symptoms (fluttering in lower legs, but does not hurt anymore) — and I am scheduled for needed but not urgent surgery next week. I am not finding much about the wisdom of getting general anesthesia after having been floxed. At its worst my cipro symptoms included fasiculations in lower legs; tingling/not really pain but obvious sensation fluttering throughout lower-thight to ankle; extreme anxiety; zero appetite -lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks; wildly fluctuating blood pressure and heart rate, even while sleeping; mild but obvious cramping in my calves.

Any other sites or anything you are aware of about the anesthesia question would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    • Ernesto February 7, 2019 at 1:18 pm Reply

Hi. Did you ever follow through with the anesthesia ?

  10. Diego June 8, 2014 at 5:39 pm Reply

I didn’t have ear surgery! I only had tubes put in my ears to drain! All my ent doctor used was hydrogen peroxide. I have not used any type of anesthesia post flox.

I have been wanting to respond to your inspiring story for awhile, but lately typing on the computer flares my symptoms. Today I felt I would write to you anyway.

I teach K4-8th grade music at a small parochial school, so we have much in common. I worried at first that my voice had been affected. But maybe the laryngitis was just from the sinus infection for which I took the Cipro. It eventually went away and my voice is back. I find singing and playing the flute help with my anxiety symptoms– it’s the deep diaphragm breathing, I think. Deep, chest expanding breaths activate the parasympathetic nervous system. My sympathetic nervous system is still going a bit crazy from the Cipro, but it’s getting better.

You have so much courage and I hope that you continue to get well.

I taught my students a song called “Nothing Can Keep Us” which is all about how nothing can keep us from the love of God. It was an amazing comfort to me, hearing their little voices singing it. I got if from the book Lift Little Voices by Carol Greene and Deborah Carter. It’s published by Concordia Publishing House. It says it’s for Pre-K through Grade 2 on the cover, but I have used a lot of the songs with my older students also. There are some good Easter ones in there, very suitable for older kids. You might want to look into it for your music ministry. The songs are so good, you might just enjoy it for yourself. I sing “Nothing Can Keep Us” when I need that reminder: “Dangers at home and dangers far away, We know that we are going to be ok. Nothing can keep us from the love of God.” (It’s got a nice syncopated little melody to it, very catchy.)

Ruth Young, it is so good to hear that you are doing better also. My students keep me going. I sill haven’t gone back to singing but when I’m better and stronger I will sing again. My voice too continues to improve. I’m hopeful I will be able to continue being a tenor! God Bless You!

What interests me the most is why some people can take this stuff everyday for a year and don’t get symptoms and others take 1 pill and crap out.

If you’re thinking about every detail you can remember, what did you do differently before getting the last dosage?

      • fluoridefreealaska December 30, 2015 at 9:44 am Reply

Fluoride is a toxin that bioaccumulates. Our bodies very efficiently chemically bind in our bones and calcium rich tissues about one half of all F consumed so we feel no symptoms of the fluorides extreme toxicity until we have used up our natural capacity to neutralize the F toxin. Suddenly F is free in our blood and nervous system to begin to wreck havoc in many painful ways- arthirtis, anxiety, numbness etc

Diego, I have a question for you regarding about the TB shot that is required for teachers. I teach and I am worried about the TB shot causing more problems. Did you have this shot and did you have any reaction to it? I am glad you are doing well. Your story is very inspirational.

    • Ruth Young July 21, 2014 at 6:58 am Reply

I had the TB test this year in April, after being floxed in February. It was the newer TB test– the shot, not the one where they poke you with those tines. No problems from it whatsoever. I was worried too. But don’t worry.

      • Laura November 8, 2014 at 10:44 pm Reply

Thanks. I just read reply. Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I was re-checking, as I have been worrying about this. I appreciate your response. Laura

  14. Diego July 9, 2014 at 1:27 pm Reply

I had the TB shot years ago. Before I got really sick with Levaquin. I had taken levaquin for about six years every time I had a sinus infection. It was during these years I took the TB shot.

    • Laura July 14, 2014 at 2:45 pm Reply

Thanks Diego. Doesn’t your school district require you to have the TB test every few years? Most make you have it checked every 3-4 yrs. If you happen to hear of anything related to the TB shot and reactions after taking fluoroquinolones, I would appreciate it if you post. Thanks so much. I am glad you are doing better.

Laura, no my school district does not require the TB shot.

Hi Diego. How would you describe your weak neck? Does it hurt to the touch? Ever cause jaw pain? I can’t tell if neck pain is coming from jaw or vice versa! Hope it’s getting better. Also with your throat does it just feel tender all the time and sore to touch on outside? There r my two major symptoms now. Thanks!!

Diego, Glad to hear you have some recovery. Sounds like me. I too also took about 70 pills in a short duration (4 weeks) for prostate infection. I noticed you were trying the Doterra oils. How did that work out?

  17. Kim November 14, 2014 at 2:06 pm Reply

Your symptoms are so similar to mine except I have neurally mediated hypotension as well. The first five months I was sick, I couldn’t get off the couch without almost passing out and had s horrible “fog” in my head. So scary. It’s been a year for me and I am slightly better. I don’t believe any of my doctors want to admit this is what happened to me but currently counting on my acupuncture treatments for help. Thank you for sharing! Take care and hang in there!!

  18. tricia December 20, 2014 at 7:30 pm Reply

Diego, I am inspired by your story and can’t believe how much you endured. I took levaquin as well about 7 weeks ago. I started out w a severe psychological reaction, that subsided . Now I have a lot of leg, feet pain which seems to be getting worse. I hear some people have to get worse before they get better, I just don’t know what to expect at this point . I’m thankful I can still work part time and carry on as usual for the most part. Hope you are still doing great 🙂

Happy Monday Everyone! It has been a while since I have updated. So here it goes. At the moment I have 10 weeks off for summer! It makes it easier to take care of myself. I finally bought a juicer and drinking two 8 oz juices per day in addition to food. Juices contain mainly greens and I add a few fruits to make it taste better. I am also experimenting with supplementing vitamin d3 and magnesium in drop form. Last week I also removed all mercury fillings which could have been attributing to much health problems: the day of removing the fillings I received much relief and have seen changes in energy and PN improving! I did it all with no anesthesia and had them done with a holistic dentist! Very important! He ozonized my teeth and gave me an ozone treatment via the ears for 11 mins. I made history-dentist said no one has ever done this much work without anesthesia-I told him-levaquin will do that to ya! I will have a second one done in July. He is also going to give me an IV of vitamin C in July(I’m only doing 20 mg-which is half of what he normally gives). I am getting more aggressive with therapies! I eat very healthy and add onions, garlic, and herbs to all my food. Since getting my mercury fillings replaced, I have been able to walk better. I noticed I could do things with more ease. I began walking 3-4 mins. Then 3-4 mins twice a day. This morning I walked 10 mins. Finally I would like to recommend the following for better sleep: 1. Tapping for insomnia(type this in youtube) 2.Meditaing 3. Diffusing essential oils in home. Keep fighting! You and I will get there! I have also been able to sing better and I am at a point where I am taking risks in trying out therapies to rebuild my immune system. I’m beginning to recognize myself again in the mirror! World get ready because Diego is coming out better than before!!! I will say these last words: FOOD IS MEDICINE!!! Feed your body the best of the best!!! I’m getting closer to my COMEBACK!!!

And Diego has a beautiful voice. He sent me a voice clip via facebook one day.. thanks Diego :). Me and Diego voice message most days. We live in the same city. I’m letting him do treatments first…lol. He is very brave.lol.. I’m a wimp but I’m going to try the ozone therapy via ears.
We are getting better daily. I am once again very functional and back to work. There is hope for everyone.

    Hello Diego
Im from South Africa, I just want to find out what is the name of the material of the fillings they used? I must also go for my 6 mercury fillings to be replaced, but as youve said one must use those dentists. theres many fillings and the normal white ones releases plastic or something. Im 21 months out from mefloquine anti malerial (cousin meds of quinolones). Much better but still sick.
    God bless

  26. Diego June 24, 2015 at 7:18 am Reply

Hi Ursula! The holistic dentist told me all materials he uses including fillings are organic and less harmful to body.

thanks will look for one here, didnt know it can make a difference in how one feels, i went from a psychotic type depression and severe anxiety till were im now (better), was dying without ativan and stilnox the first 7 months, had to use it (i know it also puts one into withdrawal as it is poison itself, but im meds free for months now). My nightmares stopped about 16 months out. still tinitis on off lightly but better, and still PN but more numb and tingles and little pain / stiffness but can walk the tredmill, still fatique, spaceout, head pressure, DP, I see most mefloquine cases takes a few years from 2 to 8. For me the head thing is the worst.

Ursula, what were your psychotic symptoms like? I also have had strange symptoms from the start. Anxiety (shaking), and feeling like I am in a dream world – the familiar no longer feels familiar – like a dark cloud follows me everywhere. I cannot think well either. I am believing these symptoms will go away and I am soooo looking forward to when that happens and I can enjoy life once again!

LInda I only now saw this. I never hallucinated but i saw images like faces sad weird expressions or scary images if i closed my eyes, but not when eyes was opened, that carried on for very long or sometimes patterns or moving circles but not in colour, like negatives of photos. My story is weird. These was all the anxiety it can make you delusional. The doom feeling took about 2.5 years to get better and the tinitis also. nightmaires 18 months. took 18 months to get to 7 hours of sleep. So after 3 years i felt better and then i had a realatively good 2 years of which that last year i started to eat cleaner just veggies meats fish fruit and nuts. no gluten no grains no dairy no sugar. 9 cups of veggies!! terry wahls protocol more or less. then i weird thing happened last year i got a virus cytomegalo virus its like ebstein barr, GERD started i cannot drink a ppi as my body gets all side effects, so my poor esophagus! and i ve started with peri menopause symptoms on top of it. so went off diet as peri has its own mind it plays on you, so im not in good place now hope there is light in tunnel post the pause date as im in the dark life is not easy for me i cannot take hormones natural suppl as i react to everything i am toxic the stiffness soreness never left this body, and brain fog still but the anxiety (GERD relatedand peri related) came back

Hi Diego. Thank you for sharing. I am so happy you are feeling better. I am 9 months out from a several cipro reaction. Had many of the same symptoms but have improved greatly. I hope you continue to heal. I know it sounds crazy but two things that have really helped me are homeopathic pulsatilla given to me by a naturopath and detox foot baths. I take chlorophyll daily, magnesium and B vitamins. Another thing I found helpful for pain is a tumeric supplement. Good luck!!!

Dan you can read my story and there I explained my symptoms. The Naturalpath doctor I see is helping focus on nutrition and healing the gut. She says that much of our issues are gut related. She uses the most natural of supplements.

    Hi Diego
I’m Marc and i have recently been floxed, i am now 3 months out. I have made friends with Ruth and she told me how much of an inspiration you are and i really liked your video. She said that you had some problems with sound sensitivity and hearing? I am a sound engineer and was wondering if you mind giving me some insight on what problems you had with the sound sensitivity. I am having all the other symptoms common to floxies but my hearing is crazy sensitive and i’m wondering if there was anything that helps?

Thanks so much for sharing everything you did. I hope we get in touch and chat more. I am also hoping to go visit Ruth late this year in August if i can. Looking forward to hearing from you Diego 🙂

Vitamin D interferes with levequin and cipro’s mechanism of action. It affects it’s absorbtion . This is why they say NOT to take vitamin D while on those antibiotics. To recover from your toxcity, you need to get your vitamin D level up to healthy levels . You also need to take magnesium and vitamin E. If you do this over the course of a year, you will be close to full recovery . I went thru this myself . Those horrible antibiotics dropped my vitamin D level to 18 and experienced many of the same symptoms.

Hello Diego, thank you for sharing your recovery story. I think I also had a relapse but it could have been a flare. Because I felt like I did back in Aug 2014 for the past 41/2 weeks however I didn’t get all of the initial symptoms. I didn’t find out I was floxed until April 2015, when a local tv station did a report. I noticed some symptoms coming back after doing some yard work and intense workouts. I was wondering with your relapse were there any new symptoms and do you know what might have caused it?

  39. Diego June 21, 2016 at 8:01 am Reply

Today, I am more recovered! However, not 100 percent. This year I was able to make a change for the next school year. I have been able to go on interviews and feel really good about that again. I’m excited for the following school year as I feel this change is healing and will be part of my healing journey. In the past I was too weak to even think about change. I have been doing FSM treatments and they have really helped. I have done 3 so far and will continue to do one per month. It is like acupuncture but without the needles. Hang in there, every year gets better. Although I am not yet at the mountain top, I keep working to get there! Day by day, week by week, month by month, and year by year! We can do it! We will reach 500% recovery! Happy little update!!!

Diego your post really touched me! Thankyou for being so positive and writing such a positive thing, I will revisit your article when I need that extra bit of faith! I have taken cipro several times for UTI over the last 2 years and only on the last occasion did I get ill. I really believe a positive attitude and the get up, dress up, show up attitude you mentioned are really important to get us through this. Yes we are allowed to have times where we feel down but we must come back with a positive mental atttitude and soldier on!

Diego, how are you doing with your recovery? It’s almost been a year, and some of the symptoms have disappeared, but others still linger. My email address is Itadmin@cieskincarecollege.com

It’s unbelievable that this drug is still on the market given the horrible side effects it presents. My reaction was nowhere near yours, but it is so helpful to hear your story. I feel like we are all lucky to be alive.

The vindication you are talking about by your doctors admitting it was Levaquin was not my experience- unfortunately. Instead I felt like I had a brain tumor. Or going insane. Hypochondria..The sad thing is I had trust issues before and now they are exacerbated by this happening to me. My heart still has a flutter now and then, but I try to think to myself- “don’t be afraid. Your heart is just trying to find its beat again.”

Diego, so glad you have recovered! Do you feel like you are now 100%recoverd now? Your story is very uplifting! Ruth told me that you dealt with a lot of insomnia and might have some suggestions for me to help me begin to get some sleep again! I had a terrible reaction to melatonin( major increase in anxiety and brought on severe tinnutus). I know that sounds pretty crazy! So I will not take anything to help me sleep. Anyway do you have any advice to break this insomnia?? I know time is obviously a big factor and I am 4 months into recovery right now. Any help from you would be appreciated!!!! Dee

I am also Christian woman and believing for a total healing for all the problems I have in my whole body! I try to keep focused on Him and have faith and hope He will guide me through this cause I have many days I struggle and let my guard down! But I’m learning! Stay strong and pray daily; He will never leave us nor forsake us(promised)!!! God bless you!!

One of my hardest battles has been not being believed by friends and family members as well as clinicians concerning the multiple symptoms which I have been dealing with; no, let me rephrase this; which I now live with. Reading your testimonial is almost like reading the story of my life. It helps me to know that others have gone through all of this and continue to exist in the presence of FQAD. The struggle to get help is alarming to me, as I am a retired nurse and basically was a healthcare giver for 50 years. Even fellow nurses don’t understand the seriousness of Levaquin poisoning, What can be done to change societies general view of this devastating damage done to the body of unsuspecting victims? I want help, and I want to help others. This is pure torture. Thank you again for sharing. It gives me hope that things will get better as I search and find ways to aid my body into repairing itself as God intended it to do. I’ve learned much about this magnificent body and the mitochondria damage that has been done to it. Sincerely, Anita
