Toni’s Story of Recovery from Cipro Toxicity

I was a 56 year old mother of two, athletic runner and busy massage therapist until February 5, 2016 when my life changed forever.

I went to a new dentist that fateful Friday afternoon and during a root canal was horribly injured and went straight from the maniacal dentist’s chair to ER to ICU for 4 days, where I received IV Decadron (a fluorine based steroid), IV Flagyl and Vancomycin. Upon discharge , I was handed a script for 2 weeks of Cipro and prednisone. Little did I know, how much worse my nightmare would become. I laid in bed from the dental trauma for nearly a month under heavy sedation. My pallet had split open from swelling and the pain was excruciating.

I did recover and went back to work in April of 2016. Upon my first massage, my elbows and wrists became inflamed. I chalked it up to being in bed for almost 2 months and powered through. By July 20th, I was toast. I gave my last massage that day due to severe tendon issues. I thought that my body was failing from all the steroids and never imagined it was from the antibiotic, Cipro. Fast Forward to month 9. I had every symptom you could fathom:

Frozen shoulder
Tendinitis in elbows and shoulders
6 herniated discs
Vision and hearing loss
Suicidal ideation
Severe peripheral neuropathy
Leaky Gut
Ringing ears
Systemic Candida
And more symptoms than I can list.

I had little use of my arms and walking was difficult as well.

One day I googled idiopathic , bilateral shoulder tendinitis and BOOM! Cipro/Levaquin Toxicity popped up. I read in horror . I felt I had been given my death sentence.

I took this information to my doctor who patted me on the head, told me to stay off the internet and shoved a prescription for Lyrica and Abilify in my hand. I immediately found Lisa’s Floxie Hope site (shout out to Lisa Bloomquist who, with this site has no doubt, saved my life and most likely, hundreds of others just like me).

The very first thing I did was find a good functional medicine doctor on this website:

I started receiving weekly IVs of glutathione and a blend of nutrients known as the Myer’s cocktail. I received these IVs every week for 6 months. I was the first Floxie my functional medicine doc had treated, so, this was new to him. For the most part, I researched how to reduce inflammation, how to heal the gut, which in my opinion are most critical in the acute phase. These antibiotics create immense oxidative stress / inflammation and obliterate our intestinal flora and the lining of our digestive tract, creating an onslaught of symptoms that are beyond comprehension. I cut out ALL sugar, gluten, dairy, msg, soy, processed foods, fluoride in my water and toothpaste ( fluorine is the element in FQs that allow this poison to cross the blood brain barrier and its highly toxic and must be avoided at all costs). I purchased the Berkey water filter ( it’s one of the few that filter fluorine out of tap water). Fluorine is also in the herbicides and pesticides sprayed on produce, so eating ALL ORGANIC fruits and veggies is important. In addition to eating organic, it’s very important to avoid standard beef and poultry as they are commonly treated with FQs. Eat only free range, grass fed organic meats.

I added a boat load of supplements as well. My supplements are powders and come in bulk from Micro Ingredients. They are organic, soy free, msg free, no fillers and made in the USA. I put all of my powders in a smoothie with Pea Protein Powder 2x per day.

-Vitamin C in powder form by Micro Ingredients
-Collagen Powder by Dr. Axe or Bullet Proof
– NAC / Micro Ingredients
– ALCAR/ Micro Ingredients
– L Glutamine/ Micro Ingredients
-MSM/ Micro Ingredients
-Quceritin/ Micro Ingredients
– Colostrum / Sovereign Brand
-Multi Vitamin : powder by Innate brand
-Amazing Grass Superfood Alkalizing and Detox powder
-BCAAs: in powder from Micro Ingredients
-L Arginine : Micro Ingredients
-Hyaluronic Acid: Micro Ingredients
-MCT Oil: Sports Research

I place all my powders, MCT oil, filtered water, one banana and a few organic frozen strawberries in my blender 2x per day. Powders are pure and more easily absorbed.

I highly recommend investing in a food processor. I use mine every day and blended all my food before eating it the first 6 months because my guts were destroyed and I was not absorbing nutrients. I blended my salads, my chicken, everything!

Miscellaneous supplements:
-vitamin D/K in liquid form
-vitamin E in liquid form
I use Pure Encapsulations and Thorne Research for my miscellaneous tablets that are not available in bulk.
– Topical Magnesium gel ( daily)

-Magnesium is CRITICAL!
I use Perque Plus Mg
-Omega 3 gel caps
-Organic Bone broth
-Boron for detoxification and bone health.
-Digestive Enzymes before every meal.
from Enzymedica are very good. I open one capsule in water and drink before every meal.
/ Pro and Pre-biotics to heal the gut.
I use RESTORE to heal my leaky gut. This can be found on Amazon and it is amazing! I also had systemic Candida and used Candacid Forte by Orthomolecular in conjunction with a strict diet to tame the Candida.
For pain: Wobenzyme in tablet form is the best thing for aches and pains I have ever used.
I also use Kratom from Coastline Kratom for pain.
Mitochondria and fatigue :
-Mito Cell PQQ
-NRF-2 Boost by Pure Therapeutics

Avoid: NSAIDs, Steroids, any drugs with a fluorine base (Diflucan, Flonase, Paxil, Lexapro, and a few others.) Please go research if you are currently taking any prescription or OTC meds, as these could unknowingly prevent you from healing.

Other meds that can worsen our situation is immune suppressant drugs for various auto immune issues created by FQs…Plaquenil is a quinolone and will take you down a road of no return. Enbrel and Humira, to name a few. The vast majority of these meds, vaccines, Tamiflu, Flonase, SSRIs, Lyrica, sleep meds, Benzos, all have safe alternatives . Always search for safe alternatives before running or reaching for a poisonous quick fix. The costs far outweigh the benefits.

The most important piece of advice I give to others who are injured by this antibiotic is to stay out of the doctor’s office! They do not understand FQT. They can only mask ( not heal) symptoms with more toxic poison that will damage us more, making recovery exponentially more difficult. I should know, because I was ruined further in those first 9 months with IV NSAIDs and steroids. We are far better staying at home, eating healthy and utilizing supplements.

Big Pharma and doctors put us here, so, why return to the scene of the crime for more punishment?
I also wanted to gain my muscle mass back, as I had lost over 25 pounds of muscle mass the first year. I was a skeleton with lots of excess skin. I looked horrid! I started eating, drinking and training like a body builder in hopes of filling that loose skin with muscle. I drink 10 organic egg whites every single day, bought a rebounder and resistance bands at Walmart and began the journey back to being healthy. I am happy beyond belief to be running 5 plus miles every day, lifting weights and living life again. I try and reach out to others as often as I can, as this has helped me make sense out of this nightmare.
I have some permanent damage such as vision loss in my left eye from an eye stroke in October of 2018, I sometimes struggle with flares due to weather, stress, etc… but it is manageable with a clean diet and Kratom.

I know to the core of my being that healing is absolutely possible. I pray my story gives others hope .
I must say that there was one very special person that I must thank from the bottom of my heart, because without Robin Bailey , her steadfast friendship love and support, I’m not sure I would have made it out alive. I love you Robin!

This account is really inspirational. I am not sure all would work with me, as I calculated a total exposure to Cipro, both oral/IV with and without steroids, : (, at 13 weeks, over 10 years. Most for infections that i did not turn out to have. 6 weeks in patient for a botched surgery with internal bleeding and peritonitis from a contaminated laporscopic set up. I was found in shock the next morning, and came very close to losing it. My functional medicine pharmacist says I am toast. Need to start with a microbiome test. Certain foods like oxylates cannot be broken down. My PT states that despite being active for my age of 63, (own and work a horse ranch) my muscle/tendon structures do not feel viable. Mush muscles with really tight contracted tendons that break easily. Have a horror story about my left lower leg and ankle deconstructing when stepping down an incline in 2014. Despite all of this, I have moved way beyond the suicide ideation in 2014, and with a somewhat functional left ankle, I still ride and enjoy life.

Hi Toni!! That is an amazing and inspirational recovery story! All o can say is “you go girl!!” I am 9 months out and actually have made slot of improvement! Still struggling some with insomnia, anxiety and very annoying tinnuitis!!!! Did the ringing in your ears finally cease or get so mild you didn’t notice it??? Did you deal at all with insomnia?? If so is there anything that helped your ringing ears and or insomnia?? You give all of us recovering floxies great hope!!

    • rusty18901 March 14, 2018 at 6:39 am Reply

Hi Dee, I did not even realize I was floxed until month 9, so my healing journey did not begin until then. You are still early in the healing process. I was very fortunate to not have insomnia and my heart goes out to you and the thousands of others whoo suffer this condition. My ears still ring non stop. I now wear two hearing aids since being floxed. I suppose I have just adapted to the ear ringing and use a white noise machine at night to drown the sound. Please feel free tomessage me on Face Book anytime!

Hi Toni. Thanks for your response! I am sorry to hear you had to “start” your recovery at 9 months but happy that you feel mostly recovered now! I’m not sure how to personally message you on Floxie hope Facebook?? Two questions for you. Has your ear ringing calmed down and gotten a little quieter? Also I see you had a lot of gut issues. I have had leaky gut for years and I’m sure it is slowing down my recovery. There are so many probiotics and prebiotics on the market! Can you suggest a brand of both that really helped your gut? I know we are all different but it is overwhelming to wade through all of these supplements and brands! I figure you have healed your gut so have some good suggestions! I know about the Restore product and took that a year ago before being floxed but have not tried it since being floxed. Do you have any more pointers on healing leaky gut and what worked for you?? Also what tinctures did you use for D/k and anything else? If you would prefer to email my personal email that would be fine I am 61 and was a PE teacher losing 40 lbs of fat and muscle within 4 months of being floxed. I couldn’t finish my last semester of teaching because of my symptoms and retired after Xmas! I want to get back my muscles and fitness level also!! Thanks Toni!!

I have posted a couple of times in the Flox group that on two separate occassions (tested) I’ve stopped the ringing in my ears by taking Soverign Labs colostrum powder (very pure). On it for less than 2 weeks each time and the ringing stopped. I was able to then only take it every 3 days and keep it at bay. At this time I’m not even on it because I’m supposed to not eat dairy right now – Have had ringing 3 times for 30 secs in last 3 weeks. It’s worth checking into….it contains growth factors.

    Hi Toni,

Thanks for your story! I took a hiatus from this website, but check back periodically, mostly when I am having a downturn of symptoms. Like you, I was given steroids and umpteen antibiotics for sinus infections I didn’t even have! I went to the ER after having so many disruptions to my senses after taking prednisone and when I said I’m fairly certain it was the steroids- they gave me decadron (told me it wasn’t a steroid) and then more antibiotics and then decided to “kill the infection” with cipro and flagyl… Like you, the best way I could describe myself at that stage was “toast.” I still can’t believe I survived that first year when I was literally falling apart. I felt like something right out of a science fiction movie. Every protective factor in my body was pulled out from under me! Unlike most, I knew what was happening to me and was so disillusioned by the doctors and how I was treated when I told them I was poisoned by these medications. I can’t even comprehend how awful I was treated looking back when I was so poisoned that I was barely able to talk, breathe, or walk into the office and I forgot my name, my personal information, how to drive- I was so ill, neurologically. For me, the most heartbreaking side effects have been related to my vision. I had perfect, crystal clear vision before this happened and now I have to wear prism glasses full-time. I have huge floaters in my eyes and so many neurological issues with my eyes plus dry eyes, wavy vision, low vision, 3-D like vision, double vision. It’s hard to get out of bed some days. I do and I work full-time still, but I have good and bad days, ups and downs, highs and lows where I feel I can put this all behind me. Things cycle, as you know. The anger lingers when symptoms flare. I am having a bad few days with vision things rearing up again. I had a few weeks where things were relatively calm. The sensory things are the hardest things to heal, I think. Do you wear glasses? Did you have head pressure? What other sensory disturbances did you have?

Toni. Did your eye and ear issues come on pretty early in your floxing?? You mentioned having an eye stroke in 2018? Did you have the stroke in 2016 or 2017? How much damage did it do to your vision?? I am dealing with some new eye issues at 10 months out and thought it seemed a little late in my recovery since I haven’t had too many problems with my eyes other then dry eye, some aching in the first 3-4 months and maybe a “little” more blurry. I am hoping this latest eye symptoms is hopefully a little setback or relapse. Just wondering when your eye/ear issues really started coming on strong????

      • Anna October 7, 2018 at 5:42 pm Reply

I had an extreme eye episode within 72hours of one Cipro pill, went to the ER, symptoms included severe pain behind the eye/light sensitivity, blurred vision, eye tightness and discomfort with moving eyeball. Eye was determined healthy, vision and pain resolved, so tendon/muscle/sinus/connective tissue was determined to be the issue. 3 months later I am stuck with swelling in lower eye muscle, that looks abnormal, I am considering steroids for this, but I am scared.

Dear Toni, Having read your testimony and having been as diligent as you since I was floxxed in 1996 with 60,000mg of Cipro, I have been living on the edge for 1/3 of my life with unbearable headaches and nausea. I tried to end my life in 2010 and woke up in the hospital and began caring treatment by a Functional Medicine Practitioner. I am 68 and an avid cyclist which allows me a small amount of relief on aggressive rides. I had a sinus surgery which was fumbled and resulted in two more nasal septoplasties. I haven’t had more than a 3 hour sleep period for more than 15 years which I use xanax to knock me out upon awaking in tortuous pain. I dream about being at peace for just one day to see what life feels like.

Thank you for reaching out to all of us and inspiring all of us who continue to hope for a breakthrough.

    Sincerely, Dan Jervis

It is not clear, but it seems from your story you did not have issues with walking on your feet…calves, all ankle tendons, etc. I had this for the first three months and it got better. Now, in month seven it has returned for no reason I can think of. Extreme fatigue was what I was working on, but now I have the issues with my legs and I was wondering how , when did you know it was safe to exercise? Especially at the level you are doing? At 8 months I read I am still in the healing stages…..when do you know you are not? My legs were really good for several months. I’m doing everything I can but am told..time. Patience.

Greendingy I’m in very early stages of this (not even at 14 day mark but already can’t walk.

Hoping this will go. Please tell me how you coped those 3 months? Did anything make it better/worse ? Did you go to work etc.

      Thank you!

      • Dee October 17, 2018 at 10:55 am Reply

Lorna. I’m just going to chime in and say that if you take anything make sure you are taking Magnesium!! Most floxies try to take 600-700 mgs a day to help them recover. I take Angstrom liquid Magnesium as it is very easily absorbed and also doesn’t cause diarrhea if you are easily irritated. You can try pill form which is cheaper but it caused me to have diarrhea. If you can’t afford liquid mag then buy Magnesium glycinate or chelated. You can rub Magnesium oil on your sore tendons and muscles and also soak in Epsom salt bath or Epsom salt foot soak to get extra mag. Drink lots of “clean” non fluoride water and clean food. Avoid meats that are not organic with no added antibiotics. Another words but organic meats. Some animals are treated with FQs so don’t want to cause a flareup. Eat lots of organic fruits and veggies if possible. Hope that helps some!

        • Anna October 17, 2018 at 12:01 pm

I am 100% certain that exercise helped me, atleast the knee/tendon issues. Each time I would run the first 2 weeks, I would have stabbing pains and blood vessels would be breaking as a ran. Each time I would improve, day by day. Some people believe the sweating and accelerated heart beat are driving it out; others think the jostling is knocking fluoride loose. Either way, it is important not to overdo it and to listen to your body. Obviously, you wouldn’t keep jogging if you felt suspicious pains in the tendon, but you shouldn’t stop at every little ache either.

I had heard a little of your story but did not get the full impact of your suffering until reading this. I did not realize what was happening to me until 5 years after I was floxed. It has taken me an additional 2 years to talk to friends & relatives about this. I know 3 people who totally believe me, the rest have serious doubts. It is very defeating to feel I can no longer trust any doctor & must be careful who I talk to about this. I will soon be 68 & still work full time. When I enter or leave a room I sometimes hear people talking about my inability to walk & move in a normal fashion. No one ever talks directly to me about it or asks if I am OK. Hiding what is going on has been difficult. I read your story & am so impressed by your resolve to take back your life. You are truly a FORCE OF NATURE! Please keep posting to give others hope.

Anyone here experience eye tightness or pain behind eyes, accompanied by light sensitivity? I had perfect eyes, no sinus issues, and 48 hours after taking Cipro I went to the ER with an eye emergency. An eye examination determined the eye was healthy, so the guess what that it was an immune response to the medicine, tightening tendons or maybe even sinuses being attacked. 2 months later, I have swelling under the eye and still some aching pressure in sinus areas. Any ideas what this crap does to the orbital area?

Hi! So sorry to hear your horror story! And I am glad you are recovering.
I have a question. Do you feel the Flagyl has anything to do with your demise as well? I was what I call “poisoned” by Flagyl in April of 2018 and have many (not all) of the symptoms you do too!
But I also took Cipro in Jan 2018 (prior) and seemed “fine” but then really went downhill immediately with and after the Flagyl and I’m wondering how much they worked together to harm me perhaps? But I was still sick with infections from Jan to April so I’m not even sure how well or sick I was during that time since it’s all a blur! Perhaps the Cipro was when I started downhill a bit too. But the Flagyl made me extremely sick! Also, after the Flagyl adverse side effects incident (which was terrible!), I was given Prednisone to help “recover” in June and July – and again similar to you, feel it only made the matter worse in the long run. I am still not recovered. I suffer from terrible food sensitivity now and get horrible rashes. Plus more. Thank you for all the pointers.
What an ordeal! But I had some serious bladder infections and am not even sure what I could have done differently.
But, bottom line – I was poisoned. One evil for another!
Also, I live in fear I will need an antibiotic again one day!
All I know is I hope I never have to take Cipro or Flagyl ever again as long as I live.
I encourage people to report their adverse side effects to the FDA as well. I’m in Canada and Health Canada has a place to report adverse drug side effects or reactions on their website.
Best wishes to you and everyone else going through this,

Hello Toni. How did you get back into exercise/weight lifting? Did your tendon problems gradually get better and then you started up? I am a couple months in and can barely lift a coffee pot. I can feel the tendons in my hands, elbows, shoulders hurt and feel weak with any light weight. I used to be fit.😓
I have tendon/muscle pain all over. Feet, knees, ankles as well. I would love if anyone who has recovered will describe what their tendon/muscle progress felt like and how they got back into fitness. I feel like a bowl of mush. I miss being able to do normal activities at ease and especially fitness. Anyone who would like to reach out, my email is Toni you look great and most of all, I’m glad you feel better. I too was floxed around the same time as you. I was lucky to have already been seeing a ND for hormone therapy. After being floxed The pain you endured I too was having. I went to my ND and she put me on powders Like you talked about called Mediclear Ultra smoothie mix for the liver, as well as an experimental drug called LDN and many supplements. LDN took about 6 months to slowly work from .05mg to 4mg. After six months the terrible Perf Neurapathey went away, brain fog lifted at 6 weeks. One year I was as good as new. It’s been 3 years, I stopped taking LDN to see if I needed it anymore. The pains returned after5 days of being off it. The pain was deceased by 50% . Still more pain than I care to live with. My ND says Florine takes a very long time for the body to deal with. It will stay in your brain a very long time. LDN might be a lifetime drug for me since I was floxed at age 60. I resent Western Medicine, and Medical Drs. Since being floxed I’ve never been back to see a MD. My chances of living a healthy life will be seeing only a ND, never going to a dirty Hospital or Big Pharma pushing Drs.

Barbara, congrats on your recovery!! I got floxed at age 61 so I was really glad to see you recovered in a year! Wow! That was a fast recovery. I am 22 months out and 85/90% recovered. Since you had so much luck recovering I have a couple of questions for you. Did you get tinnitus and did it go away?? Did you have any digestion issues and if so what did you take for them?? I have morning bathroom issues (loose stools) and it is one of my lingering symptoms that I am trying to resolve. Any other supplements that your ND had you take that you felt were really significant in your healing?? Did your ND consider iodine for getting rid of fluoride?? I guess that really helps although each person needs to find what dose will work for them. I have never heard of LDN? I hope your pherphial neuropathy is relieved in the next few months!! Let me know if yuh have any other recovery tips! I really would appreciate it! I’m in that last 10 meters of a 100 meter dash!! Best to you and your healing!!

Pycnogenol has helped heal my vision. Serrapeptase, in a dose over 120,000 IU, althogh slow working, is a good asset. Turmeric, if your body can handle it is good for inflammation
Thank you Toni and others who shared what has helped them.

Big congratulations on your recovery Toni!

    I’m impressed!

Your determination to heal; and your top level of fitness went a long way to aid your recovery.
Many others might not have been so blessed.

I had a similar experience, though way less damaging, but nonetheless very frightening, putting me in mortal fear of prescription and any other meds-especially from some doctors who ignore patients genuine concerns, convictions and different opinions – on the basis that they, the doctors, know best – while literally sending us to our graves!!!
    * Respect and appreciation to millions of doctors out there, doing a great job.

I’m glad you are now an apostle of fresh organic foods, etc; and alkaline, filtered water.
    * They gave me my life back!
I just wish there is a way to get more people, especially sufferers of chronic conditions, to embrace organic.

Be careful of supplements though. Most are unregulated. In addition, stated components and dosages are often inaccurate, etc.

I greatly admire your determination to heal; following your convictions, and then, taking full charge of your own health and life!

    Congratulations once again!

Thank you for this story. I too am (was) very active in the gym. I instruct a cycle class , run , and lift weights daily …I took cipro a months ago and things just went weird 5 days after . I went to dr first time 2 weeks after I started with symptoms . He did blood work everything was great!!! I don’t know why but went back again because I was listening to friends and the ortho docs I work with . Second visit he now wants me to have a brain MRI and see a rheumatoid dr . I really feel scared but I know In my heart it’s Cipro . I had no symptoms of this muscle pain , , tenderness ,elbow swelling , and just weird skin things I can’t explain before cipro.
You said something I’m going to take your advice in and that’s not to go to the Dr. I feel like a crazy person trying to explain and I just leave his office upset . Sometimes I don’t even know how to interpret the symptoms to my own self. I think it’s best not to talk to people about this except others who understand …

Hey thanks so much for sharing this. I can see me going down this path. I had s massive reaction to an SSRI 13 weeks ago… I’m about 25% of what your doing, but it’s very hard and a lot of work with two young ruling out Lyme disease first before I completely decide how to commit and move forward.
I wondered if you could list your neuropathy symptoms, I have around 70, from that one episode of Ss.

    Many thanks

Hello everyone, I want to ask you an important question, I have a frozen shoulder problem now, My doc knows everything about floxie syndrome ( 2 years ago floxed ) and give me some drugs for the treatment. ( active ingredient is etofenamate ) and later If there will be need, he wants to use cortisone to my shoulder. I haven’t been using any drugs last 2 years. Is there. anyone here have a frozen shoulder problem and use drugs? I need some advice.

Wow!I am glad you got some good advice!I do believe the further you stay away from western medicine the better off you will be.A doctors job is to let you die a little easier not keep you alive. The hippies do not sell drugs any more because the doctors do it.Go to the health food store, not the pharmacy! All the best Toni!

I would have to be wealthy to purchase all the products this person used to get her health back. It would be wonderful if I could afford just the organic foods, never mind all the supplements. Who drinks 10 egg whites?! That alone is nuts. You’d have to spend your whole day just taking drinks and supplements and then eating meals. Too much going on there. If I were rich and had a private nurse or “chef” I would try it. Not doable for the average person.
